On My Desk Wednesday

Things are moving very slowly here this week, for various reasons. Mumble, mumble....

Despite that, my desk today bore some WIP (now completed and waiting to be popped into the shop) that just required a bit of handstitching and of course, a shower of beads. Where would I be without beads??!
This wrist cuff is mainly silk (courtesy of a friend of a friend - thank you! - who creates wedding gowns...mmmnn). The outer silk is embroidered with metallic silver threads, the underside is my favourite silver grey silk, which also forms part of the mini ruffle along the edge. Add to that some taffeta blooms and a bit of sparkle...I call that finished!

I know - not my own work on my desk this morning!

However, I had such a frustrating day yesterday when a bag lining just wouldn't play ball and fit nicely into a silk bag...so I've hidden it away until I can wrestle with it again. I clearly need to remake the lining, but that would be boring, wouldn't it?!

So, I quickly snapped these whilst they sat on my table before heading off to their classrooms. Tudor houses - the exterior, by our littlest, and the interior of a poor person's abode by our eldest (9 today xx), complete with rope strung bed, candle sconces, clay pots and utensils.

If you squint, you can just see on the left two neckwarmers, which are awaiting finishing touches. The vibrant pink silk in the centre is itching to be cut, gathered and tightened onto covered button shanks. And my little friend? Ah, he's very precious - my youngest has cuddled and cosseted him since she was a tiny baby. She thought he'd like to say 'hello'....

On My Desk Today....
A work in progress - you can see in the background, a sheet of my photographs that I'm working from. This work is based on that Cosmos pendant, but will become larger, with the addition of an extra circular 'droplet' (smaller than the one pictured), suspended from the lower edge.
More fabric layers need to be applied here, and then a touch of beading to accentuate the centre of the flower. Then, I'll begin on the lower circle..

On My Desk Wednesday

Not much to actually show for today....except this little package, sitting on my table waiting patiently to be posted to the other side of the world.
The rest of the day was spent desperately trying to refrain from pulling out each individual hair from my head, as I wrestled with trying to alter/update/modify my website. GRRR!! The shop side of it really wasn't working, so I'm trying to make it a bit more of a 'gallery' - somewhere I can simply be 'found'. Hmmm. There will be an update in a day or so - if I'm lucky.


Yes. You're right. That old biscuit tin is my basic sewing box. We've all got one, haven't we??

On My Desk Wednesday

Christmas is coming and the goose (well, 'I am'..) is getting fat(ter)...!!
Yep, preparations have begun in earnest for the festive season. Hurrah! Sunday afternoon, I fancied a cosy family afternoon, huddled in front of the woodburner, creating new (yet recycled) Christmas decorations...all of us. (I like the idea of making something new each year - and I do keep them until they fall apart! I still have a felt tree I made with my Aunt's help when I was about six).

Go on - guess what happened? Correct! I ended up doing it pretty much alone!! Well, not strictly speaking true, I suppose. The cutting up of the wallpaper strips was done by the woodcutter and youngest...eldest occupied herself with making invitations for the 'production' that they're both going to perform for us on Christmas Eve.
Tonight will see us head off to school for the first evening performance of the school Christmas play. Victorian in theme, it will feature many songs from Oliver. How will I be able to resist joining in?!! My parents would love to come see it, but as my father is in ill health, eldest thought the solution could be to perform the whole thing in miniature for them...on Christmas Eve, whilst they are here with us for the day. Aah.

So, what's on my desk? Well, our recycled wallpaper sample book cornets and snowflakes. I have it in my head that we must make many, many more...we shall see. I'm also guilty of preventing eldest from finishing her angel (seen in centre right pic); I need to starch and iron some fabric for the wings for her. Best be off and do my duty, then!

Better late than never??

Terrible pic (sorry) - taken in a hurry with my elbow propped on top of my mug of tea (why? no idea), whilst I tried to do some work on the computer. Another lesson learned. I don't multi-task very well...but don't tell the woodcutter I said that!

On My Desk Wednesday - call it Thursday!

A new Random necklace, just right for the forthcoming holiday festive season ... Lots of lovely beads and buttons - some old, some new; glass ones, resin ones, casein ones; venetian ones, spanish ones ... I could go on! A tumbling, freefalling funloving necklace, full of colour with something to interest everyone. Just a shame about our dull weather - perhaps picnik will help me out a bit later. This should be in my Etsy shop by the end of the day.

On My Desk Wednesday...

This is how my table looks today: that (small) bowlful of brooches and pendants mentioned the other day sit patiently waiting for a bead or sparkle or two, and in the background, you can see the W.I.P at the moment - a new textile pendant, fresh off the machine complete with copper thread machine embroidered edging.
Right - off to make lunch now...

On My Desk Wednesday (only that'll be Thursday, then!)

Yikes...I could hyperventilate right now. Just look at this little pile of lovelies I rescued from the bargain bin last Saturday! Simply tipping them out onto the table for their very own photoshoot has made me go all funny! It must be the lusciousness of the fabrics, or the textured slubs that does it....or simply the rich colours? Whatever it is that make these sing to me, I'm not sure, but all I can visualise right now are historical-based glamorous collars - high necked, slightly frilled and tucked, and just plain decadent.

Too much Henry VIII if you ask me!

for someone who only wears black (pretty much), I'm amazed at my ability to go potty over colour!

On My Desk Wednesday

Yep, this is my desk right now - sadly, I didn't make that delightful hanging ornament that you see in the foreground there. I bought it as a gift (hope you're not looking!), and it arrived from the Netherlands this morning. In the envelope with it was a postcard of one of LeiLiLaBoo's paintings, and her cute business card...how great is that? I'm SO pleased with it...I might just keep it for myself - after all, it's a long time between now and the C word! ( I know, it's only September - but it's good to start early...isn't it?!)

You can also just see the custom order I'm working on at the moment - a Secret Garden brooch. It's keeping me busy!!
